Florida Building Code Professional Continuing Education & Renewal Guide
Florida building code administrators, inspectors and plans examiners generally complete 14 hours of approved continuing education every two years. Before choosing courses, first confirm whether you are on a standard renewal, a first renewal, or a provisional-certificate path.
For a standard renewal, Florida currently requires:
- 2 hours Energy Conservation
- 1 hour Accessibility
- 2 hours Florida Laws & Rules
- 1 hour Ethics
- 8 additional approved hours
The regular expiration date is November 30 of odd-numbered years. The next regular expiration is November 30, 2027.

Contractors, electrical contractors, architects, landscape architects and Professional Engineers use separate renewal frameworks even when an individual course may receive recognition across boards.
Which BCAIB certificate path are you on?
BCAIB regulates Building Code Administrators, Building Inspectors, Plans Examiners, Limited Inspectors and Limited Plans Examiners.
Standard renewable certificate
Use the standard 14-hour framework unless a different rule applies to your specific renewal.
First renewal
Your first renewal may require 0 or 7 hours instead of 14. Check your original certification date before purchasing a standard package.
Provisional certificate
Do not use the standard 14-hour checklist for a provisional certificate. DBPR treats provisional certificates separately from ordinary renewable certificates. Verify the applicable provisional path directly with DBPR.
The standard 14-hour Florida BCAIB requirement
For an ordinary full biennial renewal, the current requirement is:

Florida Laws & Rules credit must be approved for the applicable Florida category; a generic law course should not be assumed to qualify. Ethics likewise must be appropriate to the BCAIB framework and professional responsibilities of certificate holders.
Current correction: Accessibility is 1 hour, not 2
Older Florida CE pages can still create confusion about Accessibility.
The current controlling BCAIB rule and DBPR's current primary CE table require 1 hour of Accessibility as part of the standard 14-hour requirement. Legacy FAQ language and some commercial pages still show two hours.
For the current standard framework, use 1 Accessibility hour.
When summaries conflict, verify the current rule and current DBPR requirements table rather than relying on an older undated page.
One CE requirement can cover multiple BCAIB certifications
If you hold more than one BCAIB certification category, Florida's current rule does not require a separate 14-hour block for each certification. Completion of the minimum CE requirement is sufficient for renewal of all BCAIB certifications held by the same certificate holder.
Provide all applicable certificate numbers to the CE provider and verify that your completion record is associated correctly before renewal.
Multiple BCAIB certifications do not mean multiple 14-hour CE blocks.
First renewal: check whether you need 0, 7 or 14 hours
Florida reduces the CE requirement for some first renewals.
If one-half or less of the initial certification period remained when the certificate was issued, no CE is required for that first renewal.
If more than one-half of the initial certification period remained, the first renewal requires 7 hours, including at least 1 hour of Accessibility.
Later ordinary renewals use the standard 14-hour framework.
Do not estimate this from the calendar year alone. Check the original certification date and current DBPR record before selecting courses.
Courses approved by other Florida boards may count
BCAIB currently recognizes qualifying continuing-education courses approved by:
- the Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board;
- the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB);
- the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (ECLB); and
- the Board of Architecture and Interior Design.
This can reduce duplicate education for professionals who hold multiple Florida credentials.
However, cross-board recognition does not automatically satisfy a mandatory BCAIB category. A course may count as general BCAIB CE without satisfying Energy Conservation, Accessibility, Laws & Rules or Ethics.
Before relying on cross-board credit, verify the exact course, approved hours and BCAIB credit category.
Can BCAIB continuing education be completed online?
Yes. Florida permits approved BCAIB CE through classroom instruction and interactive distance learning.
Interactive distance-learning courses must meet the Board's applicable registration, evaluation, monitoring, verification and student-instructor interaction requirements. The current rules also require a testing mechanism and a passing score before credit is issued.
An interactive distance-learning hour is 50 minutes of instruction, excluding breaks and non-instructional time.
The important question is not simply whether a course is online. Verify that the exact online course and delivery format are approved for the credit you need.
Provider approval and course approval are different

Provider approval is not blanket approval of every course a provider develops. Individual courses and their applicable credit categories must be approved or otherwise recognized as required.
Before relying on a course for renewal, verify:
- the provider;
- the exact course;
- the approved hours;
- the applicable BCAIB category; and
- the approved delivery method.

Report
Covered CE providers report completion records electronically to DBPR. Current reporting rules generally require reporting within 30 calendar days after completion, with a shorter reporting window close to the renewal deadline.
Verify
Check DBPR Online Services before renewal. Confirm that the correct courses, hours and certificate numbers appear in your record.
Renew
CE completion does not renew the certificate by itself. Complete the DBPR renewal transaction and pay the applicable fee before expiration.
Nonstandard license status
If your BCAIB status is inactive, null and void, or otherwise outside the ordinary active-renewal path, verify the status-specific requirements before purchasing a standard renewal package.
A normal 14-hour package should not be treated as a substitute for determining the correct reactivation, reinstatement or new-application path.
Common outdated or misleading BCAIB CE advice
“BCAIB requires two Accessibility hours.”
Outdated for the current standard requirement. The current rule and current DBPR primary table require 1 hour.
“I need 14 hours for every BCAIB certification I hold.”
Incorrect. The minimum CE requirement can cover all BCAIB certification categories held by the same certificate holder.
“Every first renewal requires 14 hours.”
Incorrect. A first renewal can require 0 or 7 hours, depending on the initial certification period.
“A provisional certificate follows the normal 14-hour renewal path.”
Do not assume that. Verify the provisional-certificate path separately.
“A CILB or ECLB-approved course automatically satisfies a mandatory BCAIB category.”
Not necessarily. Cross-board recognition and required-category credit are separate questions.
“Completing CE automatically renews my certificate.”
Incorrect. CE completion/reporting and the DBPR renewal transaction are separate steps.
