Which Florida Building Code Edition Is Currently in Effect?
As of September 2, 2026, the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code remains in effect. The 9th Edition (2026) Florida Building Code is scheduled to take effect December 31, 2026.
Florida Building Commission 9th Edition resources, analyses of changes, course creation activity, and educational materials can exist before that date. Their existence does not mean the 9th Edition has already become Florida's enforceable statewide code.

Architect-specific verification
Florida Architects: Verify Both Advanced Status and Architect Applicability
For the current Florida Architect cycle, the standard framework includes 22 HSW hours plus 2 hours of Advanced Florida Building Code education, for 24 total hours. The current CE reporting period ends December 31, 2026, before the February 28, 2027 license-renewal deadline.
Before enrolling, verify the exact course under the Board of Architecture and Interior Design and the applicable Advanced category. Florida Building Commission / BCIS Advanced accreditation and profession-specific Architect credit are related but separate checks: an Advanced course record does not by itself establish that the course satisfies the Architect requirement.
Two hours are inside the 24-hour total
Do not add the Advanced hours on top of the standard 24-hour Architect framework.
AIA / HSW status is not the same as Florida Advanced status
Professional-education recognition does not by itself prove that the exact course satisfies Florida's mandatory Advanced category.
Online completion can be permitted
Florida law permits the specialized Advanced Building Code requirement to be completed online; the exact course and delivery method still must be appropriate for the intended credit.
Keep the completion certificate
Architecture and Interior Design reporting can differ from professions with mandatory provider roster reporting. Retain proof of completion for your records and any later audit.

What Makes a Florida Building Code Course “Advanced”?
A continuing education course about the Florida Building Code is not automatically an Advanced Florida Building Code course. Florida maintains an accreditation process specifically for Advanced Building Code training.
The process involves the Florida Building Code Information System (BCIS), an approved independent accreditor, and Florida Building Commission oversight. Course information addresses items such as objectives, outline, instructional methods, credit hours, applicable code edition, references, and participant evaluation.

Preparing for the 9th Edition Florida Building Code
The Florida Building Commission is already publishing 9th Edition resources and analyses of changes across major code areas. For continuing education, one distinction is especially important: learning about upcoming 9th Edition changes is not automatically the same thing as completing an approved Advanced Code CE requirement.
Professionals may encounter 9th Edition educational material before December 31, 2026. That does not change the current effective date.
