Florida PE Advanced Building Code Requirements

Not every Florida PE needs Advanced Building Code training. The requirement is triggered by covered design work—not simply by holding a Florida PE license.

Do I need Advanced Building Code training?

The best question is not “What type of engineer am I?” It is:

“Do I actively participate in engineering design involving buildings, structures, facilities, or systems covered by the Florida Building Code?”

Florida law ties the requirement to the work being performed. A PE whose work triggers the requirement must complete applicable advanced or specialized Building Code training before participating in that covered design work.

The deadline may be before your license-renewal deadline

Advanced Building Code is not simply a February 28, 2027 renewal task. If your practice triggers the requirement, FBPE says the applicable current-edition course must be completed before participating in covered design work.

For example, a newly licensed PE planning to begin applicable building-system design in September 2026 should not wait until February 2027 to address ABC. The professional-practice trigger occurs when the covered work begins.

Which Florida Building Code edition applies?

As of August 26, 2026, the current Advanced Building Code requirement remains tied to the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code, effective December 31, 2023. FBPE states that 7th Edition and earlier courses are no longer valid for the current qualification.

Florida is also approaching another transition. The 9th Edition (2026) has an announced effective date of December 31, 2026. Because Florida's PE rule requires affected engineers to complete ABC education on each new Code edition, this page should be treated as a permanent, updateable qualification guide rather than an “8th Edition” page that will become obsolete.

I already took Advanced Building Code. Do I need another course?

Check the Code edition identified on your previous course or Special Qualifications record.

If your course covered the 8th Edition (2023), it may satisfy the current-edition requirement while the 8th Edition remains applicable. If it covered the 7th Edition or earlier, FBPE says it no longer satisfies the current qualification.

When the 9th Edition becomes the operative edition for this requirement, affected PEs should expect updated ABC education because Florida requires training on each new edition.

Is ABC an extra 19th CE hour?

Not automatically. Florida's PE CE rule allows the Advanced Building Code course to count toward the licensee's Area-of-Practice requirement.

An affected PE could therefore use an applicable ABC hour as one of the four Area-of-Practice hours rather than automatically completing 19 total hours.

ABC does not replace Laws & Rules or Ethics

The fact that Advanced Building Code involves Florida-specific regulation does not make it a Laws & Rules course. FBPE explicitly states that ABC does not satisfy the required Florida Laws & Rules hour. Ethics is also a separate mandatory category.

Your engineering discipline alone does not decide whether ABC applies

A structural PE is not automatically the only type of engineer who can need ABC, and a mechanical, electrical, or civil PE is not automatically required simply because of the discipline name.

The statutory trigger is the actual Code-covered design work.

Likewise, course selection should follow the Code-regulated work you perform. Current approved-course offerings include subject-specific training for areas such as structural design and mechanical Code changes as well as broader Building Code update courses.

Who approves Advanced Building Code courses?

Advanced Building Code courses follow a different approval path from Florida PE Laws & Rules. FBPE states that ABC course providers are approved through the Florida Building Commission.

Do not choose a course solely because the provider sells PE continuing education, the title says “Florida Building Code,” or the course awards PDHs. Verify that it is an applicable Advanced Florida Building Code course for the relevant edition and subject matter.

What happens after I complete the course?

Finishing the course is not the final step. Florida's statute requires affected engineers to submit proof of the training to the Board. FBPE uses that documentation to maintain the engineer's Special Qualifications record.

What should be on the certificate?

FBPE currently tells PEs submitting Advanced Building Code documentation to make sure the certificate identifies the course number, course hours, Code edition year, and Code/course focus. Include your full name and Florida PE number when submitting it.

What is “Special Qualifications”?

After FBPE processes the ABC documentation, the qualification appears in the engineer's licensing record under Special Qualifications. This is not simply a decorative credential: Florida law requires the Board to maintain the Code-training information so code-enforcement jurisdictions can evaluate compliance when processing design documents.

New Florida PE? Your first-renewal exemption does not automatically exempt you from ABC

A qualifying PE first licensed on or after March 1, 2025 may need only Laws & Rules + Ethics for ordinary first-renewal CE. But if that engineer begins covered Building Code design, ABC still applies before the work.

What if I submit covered design without the required qualification?

Florida law directs local jurisdictions to notify the Board when building-permit design documents are submitted by persons who are not compliant with the Code-training requirement. The Board may then take appropriate action under its rules.

For an engineer whose practice triggers ABC, this is therefore not merely an optional credential or a convenient CE category.

The 9th Edition transition is approaching

Florida is now in an unusual period where the next Code edition is already published but has not yet reached its announced effective date. That creates a predictable source of confusion:

“Should I take an 8th Edition course now, or wait for a 9th Edition course?”

As of August 26, 2026, FBPE's current Advanced Building Code guidance still requires the 8th Edition. The 9th Edition's announced effective date is December 31, 2026.
