PDH vs. CEU for Professional Engineers
A professional development hour (PDH) is the most common unit used in engineering continuing professional competency systems. CEU is a broader continuing-education term, but the units are not interchangeable by assumption. The licensing board decides which activities and units it accepts.
What a PDH means in engineering
NCEES Model Rules define a PDH as one nominal contact hour of instruction or presentation and define a contact hour as at least 50 minutes. The PDH is used as a common denominator for other credit units in the NCEES model framework. That definition is useful for understanding the vocabulary, but a jurisdiction's own law and rules remain authoritative.
PDH
Engineering and surveying boards commonly use PDHs to measure continuing professional competency. Qualifying activities, subject restrictions, carryover, and documentation vary by board.
CEU
CEU is used across many professions and education programs. Do not automatically convert CEUs into engineering PDHs unless the applicable board's rules support the conversion and activity.
For engineers licensed in multiple states
Build the plan around the strictest category or timing constraints that actually apply to your licenses, but keep each jurisdiction's renewal record distinct. NCEES CPC Tracking can help compare selected board requirements; it does not make all state rules identical.
