Florida PE Fire Protection Continuing Education & Code Requirements
Fire protection engineering in Florida crosses PE law, the Florida Fire Prevention Code, the Florida Building Code, NFPA standards, and contractor licensing. Those frameworks interact, but a PE's engineering scope is not the same thing as a fire-protection contractor license.

Current-code alert — August 26, 2026: Florida's current Fire Prevention Code is the 8th Edition (2023), effective December 31, 2023, with Florida-specific versions of NFPA 1 and NFPA 101 based on the 2021 editions. Local amendments can also apply, so course currency matters for Florida-specific fire/life-safety practice.
What does a Florida fire protection PE need for renewal?
The standard Florida PE renewal framework remains 18 hours: one Florida Laws & Rules hour, one ethics hour, four hours related to the engineer's area or areas of practice, and 12 other hours pertinent to engineering.

Fire protection engineers can use more than four technical hours. Additional pertinent fire-protection and life-safety education can fit within the 12 general engineering hours.

The State Fire Marshal adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code, while the Florida Building Commission maintains the Florida Building Code. Fire protection engineers frequently work across both. A strong Florida-specific course should identify which requirement comes from which code instead of treating “the Florida code” as one document.

Does Advanced Building Code apply to fire protection engineers?
When a PE participates in covered design of building, facility, or system work subject to the Florida Building Code, the Advanced Building Code requirement can apply before that design is performed. It is separate from ordinary fire-protection CE.

PE design authority is not the same as contractor licensing
Florida's fire-protection contractor statute expressly states that contractor definitions do not include engineers or architects and do not limit or prohibit a licensed fire protection engineer or architect with fire protection design experience from designing any type of fire protection system.
That does not mean a PE may perform contractor activities outside engineering licensure. Design responsibility and contracting/installation scope remain separate regulatory functions.

Choose CE by the systems you actually engineer
A fire-protection PE focused on water-based suppression may need a different technical mix from one focused on fire alarm, smoke control, egress modeling, industrial hazards, or performance-based design. Course titles should not substitute for a practice-based relevance check.
Local amendments and the AHJ still matter
The State Fire Marshal notes that counties, municipalities, and special districts may have local amendments applicable within their jurisdiction. Florida-specific CE should teach engineers to identify the governing edition, adopted standards, local amendments, and authority having jurisdiction rather than relying solely on a national NFPA summary.

Life-safety interfaces make multidisciplinary CE valuable
Fire alarm, emergency power, smoke control, egress, fire-resistance, sprinkler coordination, special hazards, and water supply can cross electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, and civil responsibilities. High-value CE should clarify the fire-protection engineer's role and coordination boundaries.
New Florida PE?
A qualifying first-time Florida PE licensed on or after March 1, 2025 with a 2027 expiration date generally needs only Florida Laws & Rules, ethics, and the renewal fee for the first renewal. That exemption does not eliminate an applicable ABC obligation before covered building-system design.
