Florida PE Electrical Continuing Education & Code Requirements

Electrical PEs follow Florida's same 18-hour renewal framework, but building-system work can add current-code and Advanced Building Code obligations. Course selection should follow the systems you actually design—not a generic electrical package.

Current-code alert — August 26, 2026: Florida's 8th Edition (2023) Building Code was developed using the 2020 National Electrical Code as the electrical model code. The 9th Edition (2026) transition is approaching, so verify the operative Florida code before relying on an older electrical-code course.

What does a Florida electrical PE need for renewal?

Under the standard path: one hour Florida Laws & Rules, one hour professional ethics, four hours related to the licensee's area or areas of practice, and 12 additional hours pertinent to engineering.

When does Advanced Building Code apply?

If your electrical engineering work involves buildings, structures, facilities, or systems covered by the Florida Building Code, verify and complete the applicable current-edition Advanced Building Code training before performing that covered design. The trigger is the work—not the electrical discipline label alone.

Current Florida electrical-code context matters

The 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code became effective December 31, 2023. Florida Building Commission materials identify the 2020 NEC as the electrical model code used available information of that edition.

For CE intended to teach current Florida design practice, check the referenced code edition and any Florida amendments or supplements rather than assuming a national NEC course alone addresses every Florida-specific requirement.

Energy-code education can be highly relevant

Electrical design intersects with Florida's Energy Conservation Code through lighting power, lighting controls, exterior lighting, metering, and other electrical-energy provisions. Florida has approved advanced-code education specifically addressing electrical power and lighting requirements of the 8th Edition Energy Conservation Code.

Life-safety systems cross disciplinary boundaries

Emergency power, egress illumination, fire alarm interfaces, smoke-control power, elevators, generators, and other life-safety systems often require coordination across electrical, mechanical, fire-protection, architectural, and code disciplines. CE in these areas should teach the engineer's actual design responsibility and coordination boundaries—not imply that one discipline assumes another professional's scope.

Do not confuse contractor electrical licensing with PE practice

Electrical contractor licensing and professional engineering licensure are different regulatory frameworks. A Florida PE should evaluate CE and scope based on engineering responsibilities under Chapter 471 and applicable project codes rather than assuming a trade-license course automatically matches PE Area of Practice.

New Florida PE?

A qualifying first-time Florida PE licensed on or after March 1, 2025 with a 2027 expiration date generally needs only the approved Laws & Rules hour, ethics, and the renewal fee for that first renewal. The ordinary 16 additional hours are exempt for the cycle, but an applicable ABC obligation can still arise before covered building design.
