Florida PE Mechanical Continuing Education & Code Requirements

Mechanical PEs follow Florida's standard 18-hour renewal rule, while HVAC, energy, refrigeration, fuel-gas, smoke-control, and other building-system work can add current-code and Advanced Building Code obligations.

What does a Florida mechanical PE need for renewal?

The standard Florida PE framework requires one hour of Florida Laws & Rules, one hour of professional ethics, four hours related to the engineer's area or areas of practice, and 12 other hours pertinent to engineering.

Four technical hours are the minimum, not the maximum

Mechanical engineers can use additional pertinent technical education within the 12 general engineering hours. A focused renewal plan can therefore include substantially more than four hours of HVAC, energy, refrigeration, controls, or other mechanical topics.

When does Advanced Building Code apply?

Mechanical PEs performing design of systems connected with buildings, structures, facilities, or systems covered by the Florida Building Code should verify and complete the applicable current-edition Advanced Building Code training before performing that covered design.

Current Florida mechanical code is more than a static 2023 book

The 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code, Mechanical uses the 2021 International Mechanical Code as its model-code basis, with Florida-specific amendments and later supplements. Florida's 2024 mechanical supplement revised refrigeration provisions, including references affecting A2L refrigerants and ASHRAE 15.

For code-focused CE, verify whether the course incorporates applicable supplements instead of assuming “8th Edition” alone guarantees complete currency.

Energy code is central to modern mechanical practice

Mechanical CE can be highly relevant when it addresses equipment efficiency, HVAC controls, ventilation, heat recovery, commissioning, building-envelope/system interaction, or other energy-code provisions. Courses should clearly identify the code basis and whether they are teaching Florida-specific requirements or general engineering principles.

Refrigeration is a moving target worth treating separately

Florida's mechanical-code supplements show why refrigeration CE deserves edition checking. Changes affecting A2L refrigerants, ASHRAE 15, and referenced standards can materially affect current practice. A technically sound older refrigeration course may still be useful, but it should not be marketed as current Florida-code training unless it actually reflects the applicable Florida provisions.

Smoke control and life-safety interfaces require coordination

Mechanical engineers may encounter smoke-control, stair pressurization, emergency ventilation, fire/smoke dampers, and other life-safety systems that intersect with electrical, fire-protection, architectural, and code responsibilities. Relevant CE should make clear which requirements come from the Mechanical Code, Building Code, Fire Prevention Code, or referenced standards.

Do not confuse equipment training with engineering CE automatically

Vendor training can qualify when it provides engineering education pertinent to practice, but the existence of a manufacturer certificate does not by itself prove that the content fits Florida PE Area of Practice. Evaluate technical depth, relevance, duration, and documentation.

New Florida PE?

A qualifying PE first licensed on or after March 1, 2025 with a 2027 expiration date generally needs only Florida Laws & Rules, ethics, and the renewal fee for that first renewal. The ordinary 16 other hours are exempt, but ABC can still apply before covered building-system design.

Report Florida PE CE through NCEES CPC Tracking and retain supporting documentation for at least four years. Florida Laws & Rules is separately reported by the approved provider, and applicable ABC completion is provided to FBPE for the Special Qualifications record.
