Florida PE Civil & Transportation Continuing Education
Florida does not give civil or transportation PEs a separate renewal formula. The key is choosing qualifying engineering education that actually matches the work you perform, then fitting it correctly into Florida's 18-hour renewal framework.

What does Florida actually require from a civil or transportation PE?
For the standard Florida PE renewal path, the statewide framework is the same across engineering practices: 18 continuing-education hours each biennium, including one hour of Florida Laws & Rules, one hour of professional ethics, four hours related to the licensee's area or areas of practice, and 12 additional hours pertinent to engineering.
The important discipline-specific question is therefore not whether Florida has a separate “civil PE” renewal rule. It is whether the technical education you claim as Area of Practice is reasonably connected to the engineering work you actually perform.
Match the four Area-of-Practice hours to your work
These are practical navigation categories, not separate Florida license classifications. Your actual scope of practice controls the relevance of the education.
The 4 Area-of-Practice hours are a floor—not a ceiling
A transportation engineer is not limited to four technical transportation hours. Four hours must relate to the licensee's area of practice, while the other 12 engineering hours may also be technical civil or transportation education if they are pertinent to engineering.
Can also be civil / transportation technical content
This makes a focused technical renewal plan possible. A civil PE could, for example, complete more than four hours in drainage, roadway design, traffic, materials, or construction topics without turning those extra technical hours into a separate category.
Do my courses have to be specifically labeled “Florida civil engineering”?
No single course title determines whether technical CE matches your area of practice. Course subject matter is more important than a marketing label.
A course on signal timing, pavement design, hydrology, work-zone traffic control, utility coordination, retaining systems, construction inspection, or transportation safety may be highly relevant to one civil PE and outside another engineer's actual practice.
Which Florida transportation references are current?
For engineers working on Florida transportation projects, technical references change more frequently than the biennial PE renewal rule. That makes edition awareness important when choosing practical CE.

State Highway System traffic-engineering standards and guidance.
Minimum standards for traffic engineering studies on FDOT-jurisdiction roads.

FDOT standards are project requirements, not a substitute for engineering judgment
FDOT's own material emphasizes that standard plans and design criteria must be applied appropriately to the actual project. The Engineer of Record remains responsible for determining whether a standard detail or criterion is suitable for the project conditions.
This is one reason useful continuing education should do more than recite a table or standard. Strong technical CE explains the engineering judgment behind design choices, limitations, exceptions, failure modes, and project-specific application.
Roadway and geometric design
Roadway-design education can fit naturally into civil or transportation Area of Practice when it relates to the engineer's work. Relevant subject matter can include geometric design, context classification, complete streets, intersection design, roadside safety, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, signing and pavement marking interfaces, resurfacing design, and plans production.
For engineers working on FDOT projects, check whether a course reflects the current FDOT Design Manual and current bulletins rather than relying indefinitely on a prior manual year.
Traffic engineering and operations
Florida's current Traffic Engineering Manual addresses standards and guidance for areas including signs, signals, markings, and specialized operational topics. FDOT's Manual on Uniform Traffic Studies establishes minimum standards for traffic studies on roads under FDOT jurisdiction and is also recommended as guidance for local government traffic engineering agencies.
FDOT also publishes training for traffic and TSM&O topics and notes that PDHs may be available for some offerings. Treat the completion documentation for the specific training—not the existence of an FDOT training portal—as the basis for any CE claim.
Drainage, stormwater, and water-resources work
Drainage is a major overlap area between civil, transportation, and water-resources practice. Current FDOT resources address hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater management, coastal engineering, drainage permitting, and related design guidance.
If drainage or stormwater is part of your professional work, education in those areas can be a strong Area-of-Practice fit. If it is not part of your practice, do not select it solely because a commercial “civil package” includes it.
Construction engineering, inspection, materials, and field decisions
Civil practice does not stop at design. Depending on your role, relevant technical education may address construction-phase engineering, inspection, materials, specifications, field changes, quality assurance, temporary conditions, constructability, pavement, or documentation of engineering decisions.
Keep the distinction between engineering CE and a separate project, employer, agency, or technician credential. A training can be useful for both purposes, but one credential should not automatically be treated as proof that every other requirement has been satisfied.
Does Advanced Building Code apply to civil engineers?
Sometimes—but not because the word “civil” appears in your practice description. Florida's Advanced Building Code requirement is triggered when a PE actively participates in design of engineering works or systems connected with buildings, structures, facilities, or systems covered by the Florida Building Code.
Roadway or traffic work does not automatically create an Advanced Building Code obligation.
If your civil scope enters work covered by the Florida Building Code, verify the Advanced Building Code requirement before performing that design.
What does Florida require for course reporting?
Florida PEs now report their continuing education through the NCEES CPC Tracking system. Florida Laws & Rules is handled differently: the approved provider reports that completion through Florida's provider reporting system, and the PE should verify it in MyFloridaLicense.
For ordinary civil and transportation technical CE, keep sufficient documentation and upload the supporting record to NCEES CPC. Florida requires licensees to retain CE documentation for at least four years.
New Florida PE? The 4-hour technical requirement may not apply to your first 2027 renewal
If your first Florida PE license was issued on or after March 1, 2025 and your license shows a 2027 expiration date, current FBPE guidance generally requires only the Board-approved Laws & Rules hour, one ethics hour, and the renewal fee for this first renewal. The other 16 hours—including the ordinary four Area-of-Practice hours—are not required for that qualifying first renewal.
That exemption does not waive an applicable Advanced Building Code obligation if your actual work triggers it.

Does every FDOT course count toward PE renewal?
Do not assume so. FDOT notes that PDHs may be available for some training; verify the specific offering and its completion documentation.
Does a civil PE automatically need Advanced Building Code?
No. The trigger is Code-covered design work, not the civil discipline label.
